Grade 3, Information and Technology Essential Standards

Sources of Information

3.SI.1  Categorize sources of information for specific purposes
3.SI.1.1  Classify various types of resources as appropriate or inappropriate for purposes
Assessment: Given examples of research topics the student will indicate the most appropriate tool(s) for locating that information
3.SI.1.2  Classify resources as reliable or not reliable
Assessment: Given a particular response, the student will determine the reliability of using a checklist

Informational Text

3.IN.1  Apply strategies that are appropriate when reading for enjoyment and for information
3.IN.1.1  Use visual and literacy cues to locate relevant information in a give text (e.g. bold print, italics,  • bullet, etc.)
Assessment: Students will participate in a scavenger hunt to locate a variety of print and non-print information using a variety of tools (media center layout, digital catalog, Internet, etc.)
3.IN.1.2  Compare the characteristics of genres to develop diverse reading habits
Assessment: In a reading journal, students will categorize stories they have heard or read according to genre or type

Technology as a Tool

3.TT.1  Use technology tools and skills to reinforce classroom concepts and activities
3.TT.1.1  Use a variety of technology tools to gather data and information (e.g. web-based resources, e-books, online communication tools, etc.)
Assessment:  Students will cite at least 4 different types of information sources used to complete a project where research is required
Assessment:  Students will create a flow chart on finding 3 different information sources within the media center
3.TT.1.2  Use a variety of technology tools to organize data and information (e.g. word processor, graphic organizer, audio and visual recording, online collaboration tools, etc.)
Assessment:  Students will use at least 3 appropriate graphic organizers for documenting research and process
3.TT.1.3  Use technology tools to present data and information (multimedia, audio and visual recording, online collaboration tools, etc.)
Assessment:  Students will create a direction card for 2 different pieces of technology equipment available for their use (Flip Videos, digital cameras, document cameras, flash drives, etc.)
Assessment:  Students will utilize multimedia software, a blog, a podcast, or other medium to present information learned according to a provided rubric

Research Process

3.RP.1  Apply a research process as part of collaborative research (use the Big 6 model)
3.RP.1.1  Implement a research process by collaborating effectively with other students
Assessment:  Students will complete 3 formative assessments during the course of the creation of a project (such as checklists, self-evaluation forms, group evaluation forms, etc.) focusing on project quality
Assessment:  Students will utilize a checklist, progress wiki, blog update, conference, peer support group or other progress check-in to keep track of individual or group progress for project completion

Safety and Ethical Issues

3.SE.1 Understand issues related to the safe, ethical, and responsible use of information and technology resources
3.SE.1.1  Understand the guidelines for responsible use of technology hardware
Assessment: Students will create a "Recipe for Success" card with troubleshooting steps for at least 2 available technology tools
Assessment: Given images, students will be asked to choose which ones illustrate proper technology hardware care
3.SE.1.2 Understand ethical behavior (copyright, not plagiarizing, netiquette) when using resources
Assessment:  When completing a project or research-based assignment, students must use an online tool (such as Bibme or CitationMachine.net) to create an appropriate citation for various resources used
Assessment:  Given examples of 4 different items, students will be asked to determine whether they need to secure permission for using them
3.SE.1.3  Understand Internet safety precautions (personal information, password, etc.)
Assessment:  Students must create a poster including at least 5 ways to be safe while using the Internet
Assessment:  Students will complete a project using 3 examples and 3 non-examples of handling personal information appropriately
